Crème Brûlée with Mixed Fruits

Crème Brûlée is a kind of dessert that has a pudding-like and creamy consistency. It is a baked custard that is topped with brittle melted sugar and is easily cracked when tapped gently. A kitchen blowtorch typically caramelizes the sugar on top. While the melted sugar may be warm when the dessert is served, the custard underneath is usually cold. While it is the traditional way to use vanilla as a flavoring for the custard, some variations can be used, such as fruit and chocolate. Sometimes, liqueur may be used to cover the sugar crust before it is torched.

While it is uncertain where this delicious dessert originated from, the French, English, and Spanish people claim that it originated from their country. This is the reason why there are different styles with the way it is prepared. Whichever way crème brûlée is made, it is a pleasure to eat and is a perfect way to end a sumptuous dinner. Imagine cracking the brittle sugar topping and reaching into the creamy custard beneath. You get both the crunch and the creaminess engaging your senses. Here is an excellent crème brûlée that your family and friends will surely enjoy.

Crème Brûlée with Mixed Fruits

Ingredients

3 cups heavy cream

⅓ cup of sugar

6 egg yolks

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup brown sugar packed

Fresh or canned fruits such as pineapple chunks, strawberries, bananas, mandarin oranges

Procedure

  1. In a one-quart saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until you see tiny bubbles forming around the saucepan’s edge.
  2. Meantime, blend your egg yolks in a two-quart pot, whisking it together with the sugar. Stir in the heavy cream slowly.
  3. Start cooking the mixture over medium-low heat, frequently stirring with a metal spoon until it forms a light coating at the back of your spoon. This should take about 15 minutes. Make sure that it does not boil. Add in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the mixture into a broiler-safe casserole and refrigerate for 6 hours until it is thoroughly chilled.
  5. Preheat the broiler according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sift the sugar on top of the chilled mixture and broil it until the sugar has melted about 4 minutes. Refrigerate.
  6. Place your casserole in the middle of a tray. Arrange your fruits around the pan and serve portions of the fruit with crème brûlée topping.

Many of us don’t know that while his dessert may be indulgent, the ingredients are much better than those you find in your favourite candy bars. Egg yolks for one are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. They also contain the essential vitamins A and E. Cream also contains beneficial bacteria that promote intestinal health and enzymes that aid in proper digestion.  It does contain sugar, which a lot of people may shy away from, but eaten in moderation, crème brûlée is healthy as a whole. You may find healthy variations and want to give it a go. Along with fruits that carry their health benefits, this is a tasty and healthy dessert you can indulge in after a full meal.
